Description

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 1630. The Datejust that Looks Like an Oysterquartz but it's an Automatic.

The "Rare Bird" Rolex Ref. 1630 was introduced a few years earlier than the Oysterquartz as its predecessor —at least from a case and bracelet standpoint. While the stainless steel version of this watch was named Oyster Perpetual Date Ref. 1530, the two-tone version bears the name Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 1630. Interestingly enough, the case diameter on both watches is 36mm and not 34mm and 36mm respectively as typically happens between a Date and a Datejust.

The Ref. 1530 was fitted with an integrated "Oyster" bracelet while Ref. 1630 came with an integrated "Jubilee" bracelet. A timeless and very "Gerald Genta" looking design that would later be adopted by the Rolex Oysterquartz. As you can imagine, very few 1530's and 1630's were made in the 1970's.

This Rolex Ref. 1630 came fitted with an integrated "Jubilee" bracelet in 14k solid yellow gold and stainless steel. The main difference between the two-tone bracelet in the Oysterquartz Ref. 17013 and this one, is that the bracelet on the Oysterquartz comes with two gold center links while the bracelet on the Ref. 1630 has three gold center links. It is very common to have unscrupulous sellers replace the bracelet of the Ref. 1630 with the one on the Ref. 17013 so be very careful. The clasp is identical to other Rolex clasps to the time period of this watch.

Another difference — besides the obvious difference in the automatic movement and dial imprint that doesn't say Oysterquartz — between Ref. 1630 and the Oysterquartz, is the presence of a flange with a minute and half minute track. As far as we know, all original flanges on Ref. 1630 show the minutes and half minutes, while service replacement flanges only show markers for the minutes.

Without a doubt, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 1630 is one of the most iconic watches of all time and a clear example of an era influenced by flat top cases and "Royal Oak" inspired designs. Long live the Rolex Ref. 1630.

The case design and rare integrated bracelet was inspired by Gerard Genta, the creator of the AP Royal Oak. This design sets it apart from other Datejusts. The flanged minute track adds depth to the dial and creates a most unusual Datejust look. The serial number corresponds to manufacture in 1978 and the watch features a 14k solid yellow gold bezel, 14k solid yellow gold/stainless steel bracelet, sapphire crystal, and champagne dial with date. The certified chronometer 26 jewel caliber 1570 automatic mechanical movement was recently serviced. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust reference 1630 was produced only between 1975 and 1978.

This is a vintage used watch. It may have lived a life before you, so you should not expect it to be new and flawless. If you want a flawless new watch, please do not buy this. If you want a piece of history in the form of a nice vintage piece, with possibly a dated inscription on the case back, then this may be right for you. Because most vintage watches being offered are between 30-70 years old, small imperfections, scratches, and wear are to be expected

Buying a previously owned or vintage watch is like buying a previously owned or vintage car....it is not just about the price....it is also about condition, condition, condition!

Vintage watch outlet is not a marketplace, we own every watch that we sell

Water resistance is not guaranteed on vintage or previously owned watches unless otherwise stated in the listing

I only sell genuine, authentic, watches in "Very Good" to "Pristine" condition

Condition Guide:
Pristine - Items in "like new" condition. Shows no signs of wear. Worn very little, if at all.
Mint - Items that have minimal wear. Worn only a few times. In "almost new" condition.
Excellent - Items show signs of wear. Light surface scratches and possibly a few small dents or dings. Average condition considering the age of the item.
Very Good - Items that have been worn regularly and have noticeable wear. Scratches, dents, and dings are more visible.

A careful shopper who takes the time to study the photos, reads the entire description, and asks pertinent questions is our best customer.
