Panerai, officially known as Officine Panerai, is the most notable Italian watch brand in the industry today. It has a history of supplying watches and military instruments to the Italian navy. The brand has a recognizable design language, with highly legible dials, signature cushion-shaped cases, and prominent crown guards.

A Panerai signature is their sandwich dial design, which stacks a top dial layer with cut-out hour markers and indices on top of a luminescent base layer. The lume shines through the cut-outs with high contrast and visibility.

Actually most of the former references were produced by Rolex, Panerai has just added a few design elements. You certainly know a Panerai watch when you see one. Their two most famous lines are the Panerai Radiomir with its wire lugs and the Panerai Luminor that sports a hefty crown guard. In addition to their signature design elements, Panerais are known for their sheer size, often clocking in at 44 mm or larger. Their square-ish case architecture only adds to their wrist presence.
As the brand has grown, so have its offerings. Panerai now dabbles in split-second chronographs, GMTs, tourbillons, and even cases made from bronze or layers upon layers of carbon fiber.

Panerais occupy a few different price tiers, with most models running between $5,000–10,000. Panerai watches with complications like a GMT or chronograph typically land in the $10,000–20,000 range. And vintage models, special editions, or watches with advanced case materials can sell for even higher than that.
Are Panerai watches worth the money?

Panerai produces a particular kind of watch for a particular type of person.
