24 Hours on the Wrist: Jorg Weppelink

The Never-Ending Choice

Choosing a watch for the day is never an easy task for me. Hardly a day goes by in which I only wear one watch. Sometimes this is due to practical reasons, but other times it’s all about impulses throughout the day. What can I say? I like to mix things up. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to experiment with the watches I own. Trying on different watches is also one of the perks of writing for FratelloWatches and Chrono24. There is nothing better than trying on a wide variety of watches and seeing if they make it onto my wish list. But what are my daily wearers? Let’s look at a typical day to find out.

8:30 AM: Getting Ready for Work

I work from home quite a bit, so I choose the watch of the day pretty much as soon as I get out of the shower. Lately, I have been going back and forth between two watches from the same brand. After experiencing the minimalist watches from the Italian brand Unimatic for a review and interviewing one of the two founders, I decided to buy two of their watches.

Unimatic Modello Uno U1-F and U1-FM

Both the Unimatic Modello Uno U1-F and U1-FM are inspired by classic diving watches like the Rolex Submariner, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, and the iconic Seiko 1968 Diver. The company’s founders Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato are industrial designers by trade, and their philosophy is that a watch needs no decoration. Thus, they’ve stripped down the wristwatch and are experimenting with variations of the bare minimum.

The basis for all Modello Uno watches is a perfect 40-mm round stainless steel case. The angles on the case and lugs are straight, giving the watch a sharp, industrial look. The two models differ when it comes to their bezels and dials. It’s incredible to see how these subtle elements can create a recognizable diving watch and/or a clean minimalist aesthetic that feels new and different.

I like switching between the two. While I initially wore the minimalist U1-FM a bit more in the first months after buying them, I have been wearing the U1-F more and more over the last couple of weeks.

Noon: Lunch Time

After working on articles for Chrono24 and FratelloWatches in the morning, I usually visit the Fratello office at least once or twice a week for lunch and to catch up. The team typically discusses the latest releases and checks out any watches we have received for review.

Omega Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Alinghi

Today, I got the chance to try on the new Omega Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Alinghi. It’s Omega’s latest addition to the brilliant Dark Side Of The Moon series. A collaboration with the Swiss Alinghi sailing team, this model is a bit of an oddball in the lineup.

Nevertheless, the black and red watch has the same beautiful 44.25-mm black ceramic case as some of the other watches in the series. Plus, the Speedmaster Alinghi features an incredible dial. Omega was inspired by Alinghi boats in their choice of carbon with a honeycomb pattern. Beneath the dial, you can see part of the beautifully finished Omega caliber 1865. It is truly a stunning piece of work.

The subdial at 6 o’clock features a red Alinghi logo that coordinates with the other red elements on the dial and the red stitching on the strap. The rubber strap is very comfortable, making the Speedmaster Alinghi a joy to wear.

5:30 PM: Time for Tennis!

After I get home from the office, I typically work on more articles and may try on another watch for review. Today, the Speedmaster Alinghi was the watch of choice, but Robert-Jan, founder of FratelloWatches, had the honor of writing the review. I was left with a great impression of the watch, however, and kept returning to my photos of it. To be honest, it would not be my first choice in the Dark Side Of The Moon series, but nonetheless it is another great watch from Omega.

Speaking of oddball Omega Speedmasters, it’s about time for me to get ready for a game of tennis with my Speedmaster X-33. I play two or three times a week and like to switch up my wristwear when I do. I usually opt for one of the lighter sports watches in my collection that is easy to wear and can take a bit of a beating. This often ends up being one of my CASIO G-SHOCKs. They are great watches because they are sturdy, very light, and look good to top it off.

Today, however, I’ve decided to go with my Omega Speedmaster Professional X-33. The titanium X-33 is very lightweight and easy to wear on a NATO strap. This quartz-powered Speedmaster Professional was developed in collaboration with astronauts, and therefore has a lot of features specifically designed for space travel such as a mission timer, mission alarm, and different time zones. Its most spectacular feature, however, is its design. The X-33 is a product of the late 1990s. My specific X-33 is from 1998, and I have to say its looks have grown on me tremendously.

I always take my watch off while playing tennis because I don’t want to damage it. And I generally like my wrists free when I play, so this means no watches or sweatbands. But after we finish playing, the first thing I do is put my watch back on. It just feels natural for me to have a watch on my wrist – I wouldn’t want it any other way. The X-33 is one of my favorites, so I wear it as much as I can.

9:00 PM: No-Watch Night

When I return home, I hit the shower to freshen up. I don’t usually wear a watch afterwards as it’s just two hours before bedtime. I usually chill for a bit with a Netflix series and read the latest watch news to get inspiration for the next day’s articles. Tomorrow begins a new day with more new releases, updates, and probably a new watch on my wrist!
